Every day we type addresses that start with three letters almost nobody thinks about: www. They have become as ordinary as the light switch on the wall.

And yet none of it existed a little over 35 years ago – and the idea behind it was born not in a tech company, but in a physics lab.

A problem anyone who has ever worked in an office knows

The story begins at CERN, the large particle physics laboratory near Geneva. In the late 1980s a British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee worked there. The problem on his mind was surprisingly mundane and deeply human: thousands of scientists did research at CERN, they came and went constantly, and they left behind countless documents on all kinds of different computers. Nobody could find anything anymore.

Anyone looking for a particular piece of information had to know which machine it was on, how to operate that machine and what format the document was in. A note here, a report there, a contact list on a third system – all separated from each other, all locked away on their own little islands.

Berners-Lee had a simple idea: what if you no longer kept information on islands, but connected it through references instead? What if one document could point to another – with a single click, no matter which computer the other document was on? In 1989 he wrote a proposal for it. His supervisor scribbled in the margin: “Vague, but exciting.”

The most important sentence in this article

Before we go on, we need to clear up a mix-up that almost everyone falls for – and that changes how you understand the whole story:

The World Wide Web is not the internet. And Tim Berners-Lee did not invent the internet.

That sounds surprising, but it is central. The internet – the worldwide networking of computers that can exchange data with one another – had existed for a long time already. Its roots go all the way back to 1969, to the so-called ARPANET, a research network in the United States. Through the 1970s and 1980s it gradually grew into the internet as we still know it at its core today. So when Berners-Lee wrote his proposal in 1989, that network was already two decades old.

What he invented was something else: a method for linking documents together over this existing internet. The World Wide Web is not the network itself, but what runs on top of it.

An image makes it clear: the internet is the road network – the cables, the lines, the connections between computers. The World Wide Web is the traffic of linked pages traveling on those roads. So the roads were already there. Berners-Lee invented the vehicles, the traffic rules and the signposts that made traveling on them usable for everyone in the first place. Email, for example, was already driving on those same roads – the web came along as one more, and especially successful, kind of traffic.

Three building blocks everyone uses today – without knowing it

For this web to work, three things were needed. Berners-Lee designed all three of them between 1989 and 1991. And the remarkable thing is: to this day they are the foundation the entire web stands on.

First: an address for every document. Every page on the web needs a unique address so it can be found again. That is the web address you see at the top of your browser in the address bar. Experts call it a URL – but at heart it is nothing more than the mailing address of a document.

Second: a language for laying out and linking pages. For a computer to know what a heading is, what a paragraph is and – most importantly – where a link to another page sits, a shared language was needed. That language is called HTML. Every website you visit today is written in it.

Third: a method for computers to exchange these pages. When your computer requests a page and the distant computer sends it, both have to use the same way of communicating. That is HTTP – the “http” that used to sit at the start of every web address and that many older readers still laboriously typed out themselves. Today the browser usually adds it on its own, which is why it hardly stands out anymore.

Address, language, exchange method: you are using these three building blocks this very second, while you read this text. Most people have never heard of them – and that is perhaps the best sign of just how good the invention was.

A computer with a handwritten note on it

The early years of the web have something touchingly modest about them. The very first web server in the world was not a vast data center, but a single computer on Berners-Lee’s desk – a so-called NeXT, built by the company Steve Jobs had founded after being pushed out of Apple.

Stuck to that machine was a handwritten note that read: “This machine is a server, DO NOT POWER IT DOWN.” Because if someone had accidentally cut the power, a good portion of the web of the day would simply have vanished.

The very first website went online on August 6, 1991. It was as unspectacular as you can possibly imagine: a plain page explaining what the World Wide Web even was and how you could create pages of your own. No picture, no color, no frills – just text and links. That page still exists today in reconstructed form and is still available online, at its original address at CERN.

The moment the web became interesting for ordinary people came in 1993. That year saw the arrival of Mosaic, the first widely used graphical browser. It could display images and text together on one page – something that seems obvious to us today, but back then felt like a small revelation. Suddenly the web was no longer just something for physicists and computer experts, but something you actually wanted to look at.

The decision that changed everything

And now to the second point that surprises most people – and that is perhaps the most important of the whole story.

The web was given away.

On April 30, 1993, CERN made the web technology irrevocably and free of charge available to everyone. No patent, no license fees, no conditions. Anyone who wanted to run a web server or build a browser was free to do so – without asking anyone for permission and without paying a cent.

That was by no means a given. In the early 1990s there were definitely competing systems for making information accessible over the internet. Some of them were technically more polished than the web. And some charged fees – which scared off many potential users.

Had CERN or Berners-Lee charged license fees for the web, history would probably have unfolded completely differently. The web would have remained one of several competing, mutually incompatible systems – and possibly not even the most successful one. The very reason the whole world settled on it was that anyone could use it, develop it further and build on it for free and without permission. The openness was not a nice side effect. It was the precondition for everything that came after.

From a document problem to the whole world

It is worth pausing for a moment to take in the scale of it. A solution to an internal filing problem at a physics lab – “nobody here can find their documents” – became the infrastructure on which a large part of life now takes place. Shopping, banking, news, dealing with government offices, reconnecting with old friends, looking up a phone number: all of it runs on those three building blocks designed in Geneva between 1989 and 1991.

What is also remarkable is what did not happen. Tim Berners-Lee did not become a billionaire through his invention. He probably could have, had he turned the web into money. Instead he is a university professor today and has spent decades championing an open, free web – the very idea that made the web big in the first place.

The web was never the finished product of a company. It was an idea that was given away, because its inventor understood that it would only be worth something if it belonged to everyone.

Not having a search engine. All the websites had link banners, usually at the bottom. You requested to join the link and your website would be advertised or linked to on the other websites. Also each website had a "links" page.

I first signed up with Compuserve in the early 90s which protected us from the wild open space of the internet, with a 14.4k modem. They had some pretty good forums. Then moved on later to the "proper" internet upgrading to a 56k modem, and the Netscape browser and my go to search engine was Alta Vista. They were interesting times.

ah, ALTA VISTA. Many people don’t know, but Alta Vista was originally just a marketing exercise. DEC - Digital Equipment Corporation - was a US computer company which had bet the house on developing the world’s first 64-bit chip. They called it Alpha AXP, and it was very good. But DEC’s rivals kept telling their customers “You don’t need 64-bit stuff - our 32-bit chips are fine!” And that was kinda true, for the sort of computing people were doing in the early 1990s.

Then the Internet arrived, and more particularly the Web (very good history article from Softmaker, by the way). We had the HTML, with URLs and HTTPs etc, but …nobody could find anything. What the Web needed was a search engine which was powerful enough to “see” everything and hold it in its memory for when people needed it. A 32-bit system just couldn’t cope - but a 64-bit system was practically invented for this task. If only a 64-bit search engine existed…

DEC’s boffins set one up. It was in one of their buildings in a corner of California’s Silicon Valley - a place called “Alta Vista”. If we can show how powerful a 64-bit chip is, DEC’s engineers said, they’ll want to BUY it. So DEC told its customers to give it a try. The customers loved it, they told their friends, and by word-of-mouth, within literally a few weeks, www.altavista.com became the Most Visited Website In The World.

It wasn’t perfect. The software doing the searches was very simple - you would typically get MILLIONS of hits, and they were presented in no particular order (no such things as algorithms in those days - that’s where Google stepped in several years later). But it was so much better than Yahoo, Eureka, Lycos and all the other 32-bit search engines out there - and they started to feel the pinch straight away. Lycos, fearful that they would go out of business, were so unhappy with the “solution” proposed by their supplier, Sun, that they hot-footed their way to DEC and paid top-dollar for an Alpha AXP powered server. Others did the same.

And 64-bit computing had arrived. And all because … nobody could quite understand what 64-bit computers could do, until Alta Vista appeared. One other thing: Alta Vista was just the building where the first 64-bit search engine was created, but “Alta Vista” means “High View”. That’s what a search engine gives, of course. Good name!

Before Mosaic, the first graphical browser, I recall using Web-crawler and another searching package. There was the National Library of Australia available as well as CERN. Further, we should forget that much of the success lay with the search engines such as "Google" which greatly simplified looking for documents; Mosaic was not a search engine.

The first Web browser I used could hardly be more different from the browsers most people are used to today.
It's called Lynx, and has no, repeat no, graphical capability whatsoever - it is text and text only.
And given that I was using a slow dial-up connection, that was an advantage. Text only was slow enough already, downloading images would have taken forever.
I think it's still available. If you want a feel for the earliest days of the Web, give it a try.
And perhaps also try Links.

I think Tim Berners-Lee (whether he's aware of it or not) was inspired by some thing that existed before: Apple's Hypercard. Anyone remembers this?

Hypercard organized information in "stacks" of "cards" that could contain text, graphics/pictures and "hyperlinks" that would do something on the same card (like play a video or animation), link to another card in the stack or even open another stack. I think in later versions it could even open stacks on another computer on the network. Whole games were originally invented as Hypercard stacks (I remember Uninvited and Myst) and only later got their own engine. Though Hypercard was free to use at first with every Mac, it was still proprietary and only ran on Macs (or maybe there was a NeXT version?).

I also remember having known Gopher (text pages hyperlinked over multiple servers over the internet) before the WWW. But I just learned that it was invented later, but became popular before the WWW was widespread. I used Gopher mostly to search through catalogs of libraries all over the country. And although Gopher was developed at the University of Minnesota, even running a server costs licensing fees, at least at later versions.

My first modem was a 2400er, which I used to connect to my university's mainframe (IBM360) and to various BBS, with a Commodore 128 as a terminal (80 characters!). I then used E-Mail, ICQ (chat) and telnet a lot these days. I bought my first Mac when they became affordable with the LC in 1990.

Saw my first web page with an NCSA Mosatic on a Sun SPARC station at the university. I still remember the office and the friend who showed it to me, but not the page - probably an internal one of the university to start with. AltaVista was just a few clicks later.

At home I soldered a cable to connect my then new 14.4k modem to the serial port of the Mac. The university had only

Yes I remember HyperCard ! I was hooked on it when a friend who had more money than me showed it to me and I’d spend ages ‘playing’ on his apples until in 1984 I scraped up a student loan to buy my own Mac. Exciting times!

I got a CD from a computer magazine with Netscape. I began getting information about but I didn't dare to call a US number to connect to the net. A couple of months later my bank offered me an access to the net. They sent the modem, the cables even a little expansion card in case you don't have a serial port available. The connection was made through an Internet service provider in the province nearby, but I still had to pay a national call, not a local one. One year later, in 1995, the Spanish government forced the largest telephone carrier to offer a nationwide access to the net at local call prices. Four years later in 1999 the ADSL arrived, so the line wasn't busy when you were connected. If you remember the Internet access prices you can get shocked if you compare with nowadays prices.

I ran a BBS (email and file server) from my bedroom and one dial-up phone line in the mid-1980s. Wrote my first website in 1994. Developed an AI language model in 2009. And I use Softmaker Office because I believe in buy once, use forever software!

J'ai 93 ans, et je me souviens des premiers émois provoqués par les contacts extérieurs par le canal des lignes téléphoniques. Le téléx, les systèmes de programmation CPM, puis d'IBM et enfin Microsoft. L'angoisse de faire une fausse manœuvre ... que d'heures passées sur ce qui est devenu banal et quelque peu rédhibitoire pour ceux de ma génération!

Great article. I recall going to the library in the early days and using its system to connect to CERN, one of the few options available. CERN offered a page of links to different libraries around the world with retrievable data. I selected one and clicked the link. I recall sitting at the library in Florida and realizing I had just communicated with a computer system at a library in Austrailia to exchange the information I saw on my screen. It was all text, but hugely exciting. A couple of years later, I was tasked with connecting our internal email system with the internet and setting up a website. No graphical user interfaces, except on macs. It was a wild ride. I still sit and ponder how amazing it is. Just submitting this comment is a technological marvel. Accepting data from a user on a form, storing it, and displaying it for others users on a page ... that's actually pretty amazing. I also recall writing assembly language programs to map a key on a keyboard to a dot matrix representation of an letter so you could type and have letters appear on the screen. All of this is amazing technology that we take for granted. Thanks for prompting my memory. It needs the exercise.

Another major step -- more internet than web -- was when individual e-mail services were finally able to talk to each other. At one point, for reaching different sets of people, I had CompuServe, MCI Mail, ESI Street, The Source ... and that's before we even get to Prodigy and AOL!

I can remember surfing through the bowels of CompuServe (formerly 72447, 3424, starting in 1983, and yes, I still remember my first password) to find information from NIH when my sister became ill in 1986. It's a lot easier today.

In 1984, when the radio station I was working for did a remote broadcast from Zihuatanejo, Mexico, we had to send information over a 1200-baud modem via SmartCom's terminal mode. It was interesting to watch what the static from the phone lines added to the screen.

During the pandemic, I anchored nine of hours of news each night from my living room via VOIP -- listeners could not tell that I wasn't in the newsroom until the neighbor's dog decided to bark while my mic was open.

Not sure about my first ever online experience, but I suspect it was using Netscape back in the day. For me the revolutionary tool (along with my staff at the time) was ICQ. We were amongst the first thousand users of it, this was breakthrough Comms in the day - in fact, it was our essential tool at the time. My how things have changed...

my first browser was netscape navigator, still the best. i remember learning html from an online tutorial and making my first webpage. just a homepage hosted free, there was that back them too. i found great stuff them too. for the page. it's so fun. i still love customizing where i can. it's a shame they don't let you have a homepage you just create anymore. but that's progress. i love the internet!

First used the Web on a college course in1993 or 4. A single computer with a dial up modem . It was very very slow to display a page. Had to book a time slot to try it out. I remember we chose the Ferrari web page and it was an age before anything appeared!

I remember Gopher, Archie, Veronica (not the cartoon) and using 2800 baud modems to use yterm to connect to university mainframe resources from a lowly PC with two floppy drives. Wow that brings back memories.
I think that html has many similarities to gml and sgml ... that ugly markup language we used to write reports on the mainframe. Anyone remember using dot prompts to format documents? .pa for paragraph etc. etc.

All this brings back fond memories. Back in those early days I was an engineer that honed my skills using the slide rule. I never learned anything about computers or software so all the new jargon consisting of HTML, HTTP, URL etc was totally new to me. I had to learn on the fly and never did get very proficient with DOS or any other computer language. Thank God for Apple & the Mac! Been using Mac’s ever since my first Mac 128.

In 1978, my USA-based "online" company used homegrown email and 4th generation coding languages over T1 communication lines. Nothing outside the company was accessible.

The shock of using a browser - Google? 1998? - to obtain data from a domain in Australia blew me away. The world's information at my fingertips!

I'm still awed by what browsers can provide.

I worked with and later for Computer Sciences Infonet in the wild and exciting days of timesharing, in the 70s and '80s. Infonet had a prototype email application that employees used to communicate, called EuroMessages. It allowed us to send messages all over the US, Europe, and later Mexico even before 1980. I worked at the Mexican location from 1980-1982 and that email system was a lifesaver for me. I think it ran on Univac 1100/80s iirc. Infonet was really groundbreaking and very technically advanced for its time. Any other former Infonet people on this thread?

The librarian typed my first question on a typewriter I think to the Harvard database. Some time later she phoned me and said the answer had arrived and I went and picked up a few sheets of Z fold paper. No screens, just a typewriter and a printer.

It deserves mentioning that Tim Berners-Lee published his memoir in 2025: "This is for everyone", which tells the story in greater detail. The book has also been translated into German: "This Is for Everyone. Die unvollendete Geschichte des World Wide Web".

Excellent article, very informative. I recall the early days of "dial-up" at our home. All our relatives and friends were aware not to try calling between 6:30pm and 8:30pm as our single phone line would be busy, tied to my modem. Those were the days before MS Windows. DOS 5.0 became 6.0. I fondly recall the "You got mail!" vocal prompt. Everything stored on floppy disks. The good old days!

In 1992, before Mosaic there was a browser called Viola, the creation of Pei Wei, a student at UC Berkeley. I compiled and experimented with Viola on a Sun workstation. I remember trying to convince my bosses at the time, that the World Wide Web & Internet would revolutionize the way we used computers. They laughed and told me it was a fad and would only be around for a few months. A few years later, they all had Mosaic on their networked PCs.

En efecto, primero fue la net con algo así como media docena de súper-ordenadores universitarios enlazados en los primeros días de Arpanet, y luego vino la genialidad de Tim Berners-Lee con la Web y el entierro de Gopher, reliquia hoy de algunos nostálgicos que todavía insisten en su pervivencia.

No obstante, al usuario común de nuestros días eso lo tiene sin cuidado: Para él, lo uno y lo otro son equivalentes y ¡al diablo con los tecnicismos frikis! mientras en las próximas doce horas pueda descargar dos o tres petabytes de libros digitalizados por Archive.org... :p

Y de mis recuerdos al respecto, me queda la afortunada experiencia de acceder, por vez primera, a una página de inicio web allá por 1990~91: El tiempo que demoró en cargarse creo que lo empleé para leer completa la Metafísica de Aristóteles (❁´◡`❁).

PS/ No quiero dejar la impresión de que me burlo de los nostálgicos de Gopher protocol. Piensen en esto: Si la situación política mundial sigue como hasta ahora, para mí lo más probable es que pronto nos vamos a regresar a estos venerables instrumentos del pasado: Junto a Gopher, la radiotelegrafía y la radiodifusión en onda corta..., las señales de humo y el viejo tam-tam de la selva...

We used an Atari 800 & an acoustic 300 baud modem requiring one to place the telephone handset into rubber cups to dial up bulletin boards in the early eighties.
