As legend has it, Bill Gates supposedly said in the early days of the PC that 640 kilobytes of memory were “enough for anybody.” Whether he ever actually said it is disputed – Gates himself denies it to this day. But the quote has stuck around, because it captures so neatly the question everyone was asking back then: how much is actually enough?

Today the very same question is back – for a surprisingly different reason.

Back then, the answer was spectacularly wrong. 640 kilobytes – that’s less than a single photo from your phone takes up today. Anyone buying a new computer faces the same decision, just with different numbers: 8, 16 or 32 gigabytes? And while the ads and your gut have been whispering “more is better” for years, there’s a very concrete reason right now to take a closer look.

Let’s start with the misconception almost everyone shares – and the one that costs the most money when you buy RAM.

RAM is space, not speed

The most common mix-up about memory goes like this: “More RAM makes my computer faster.” That isn’t true. More RAM does not make a computer faster. It only keeps it from getting slow when too much is open at once.

The distinction sounds like hairsplitting, but it’s crucial. Picture your memory as the size of a desk. On the desk you spread out whatever you’re working on: the spreadsheet, the letter, the ten open browser tabs, the photo editor. The bigger the desk, the more you can spread out at once before things get cramped.

But – and this is the point – a bigger desk doesn’t let you work faster. You don’t write any quicker just because there’s more space. You can only leave more things lying out at once without anything falling off.

It’s exactly the same with RAM. If you work with your 8 or 16 gigabytes and never hit the limit, then there’s still plenty of free space on your desk. A bigger desk wouldn’t change that – the free space would simply be even bigger. You’d notice no difference at all from 32 gigabytes.

Things only get cramped once the desk is full. That’s when the computer starts shuffling things off to the side – it pushes data it isn’t using onto the hard drive and pulls it back when it needs it again. That takes time, and that’s exactly when the computer becomes noticeably slow. More RAM helps in that case, because the desk is then big enough that all this back-and-forth shuffling disappears.

The takeaway is simple: more RAM only helps someone who regularly hits the limit. Anyone who doesn’t is buying pure reserve that never gets used. Not wrong – but also without any noticeable effect.

Memory has gotten expensive

Until now, too much RAM was mostly just wasted money. Since 2025/26 it’s noticeably more than that: the prices for memory have shot up dramatically, in some cases multiplying several times over.

The reason isn’t supply shortages like during the pandemic, but a shift: the AI industry is buying up the world’s memory production. The enormous data centers behind the big AI services need vast amounts of specialized memory – and manufacturers are moving their production to wherever they can earn the most. Ordinary memory for PCs, laptops, and phones gets scarce and pricey as a result.

Exactly how much, the figures vary – depending on the source and the type of memory, the range runs from steep markups all the way to a three- or fourfold increase. No single number can be pinned down, and the trend probably hasn’t run its course yet. The only thing that’s certain: memory has gotten genuinely expensive right now.

How about a little less?

This is where the two observations meet. On one side, more RAM makes no difference as long as you never reach the limit. On the other, more RAM has just become especially expensive.

So right now it pays off twice over to ask honestly: do I really need the 32 gigabytes – or will 16 do? For the vast majority of everyday users, the answer is: 16 gigabytes is plenty, often even 8. Not out of stinginess, but because more simply makes no noticeable difference when you never reach the limit anyway. Anyone who uses Office programs, browses the web, writes emails, looks at photos and streams movies will get along comfortably with that much space.

See for yourself – before you spend money

Here’s the nice part: you don’t have to take my word for it. You can check. Before you start thinking about more memory, you can find out in a few moments whether RAM is even the bottleneck for you.

On Windows, open the Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl, Shift, and Esc keys at the same time. There you’ll find the memory usage display. On the Mac, the tool is called Activity Monitor – you’ll find it through Spotlight search or in the “Utilities” folder.

Just leave the window open in the background while you work as usual: open tabs, launch programs, the typical workload of a normal day. And then take a look: am I constantly at the limit – or almost never?

  • If your memory usage sits permanently at the top under normal use, then your desk really is too small. In that case, more RAM brings a real gain.
  • If, on the other hand, there’s always room to spare – and that’s the case for most people – then extra memory would simply sit there unused.

A second suspect when your computer drags

One more tip if an older computer feels sluggish: often it isn’t the memory that’s to blame at all, but an old, mechanical hard drive. In such cases, switching to an SSD usually brings far more speed than doubling your RAM – and is often the more worthwhile investment. But that’s a story of its own.

Rough ballpark figures for orientation

If you’d like a quick rundown, here are the sizes without brand names and without price tags, which would only go out of date anyway:

  • 8 GB: the minimum. Enough for browsing, Office and email. Gets tight when lots of browser tabs and several programs are open at once.
  • 16 GB: the sensible standard for the vast majority – this is the clear recommendation. Enough reserve without paying for something you’ll never need.
  • 32 GB: only worth it for special workloads, like video editing, large photo work or virtual machines. For the everyday user, it’s money out the window – especially at today’s prices.

With a classic desktop computer, it’s also worth asking whether the memory can be expanded later on. If so, you can comfortably start small and add more when you need it, instead of paying up front for the future – though with many laptops and compact computers this isn’t possible, since the memory there is soldered in place.

640 kilobytes then, 16 gigabytes now

Back then, people asked “how much is enough?” and got the answer wrong, because nobody guessed how much the demands would grow. Today the same question comes up – but for most people the most honest answer isn’t “as much as possible,” but “as much as you actually use.” And under normal use, that’s surprisingly often 16 gigabytes.

Well, my first computer was with 8K RAM :)
When I got computer with 64K, it was 8 bit Apple 2 I think, it was like early Christmas.

Now I am greedy for memory, anything less than 64G on Windows makes me sad.
It is interesting that MacOS and my favorite Linux distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, Garuda) have a little less thirsty for memory.
Any way 64G is my target. Did I mention that I am a developer?

When I was in development - mostly in user interface and evaluation - it struck me as ironic that the coders/developers had top of the line hardware to use. In evaluating user experience, however, it was necessary to run software and hardware on entry, typical, and high performance systems, in order to get “real world” results. As a developer, you need as much RAM as you can get. When testing, though, there is a definite need to test on entry level systems with basic levels of performance capability, perhaps even “legacy” hardware.

Well amounts of RAM are dependent on the requirements of the OS. I recently had to have my youngest's computer repaired requiring a new motherboard, and fortunately I was able to find a replacement motherboard that supported the existing DDR4 RAM. The machine had 8 Gb RAM running Windows 11 Professional (had to buy a new OEM licence as obviously the original Windows 7 Pro with free upgrade to Windows 10 and Windows 11 died with the motherboard. Anyhow, with 8 Gb RAM Windows 11 Pro took 7 minutes to boot, whereas Linux Mint Debian Editiion 7 running KDE Plasma only took 2 minutes 30 seconds to get to the desktop. Both OS's on WD Black 1 Tb HDD. Upgraded the 1 Tb HDD with a 1 Tb SSD with the original HDD becoming a Data Drive or Windows 11 personal files - and added 32 Gb DDR4 RAM - Windows 11 now matches LMDE7 from boot time to desktop - I made a video of the slow comparison times before the upgrade:

My bad. What I meant to say is from power on to all things running on the desktop with all services running takes that time. One of the last things to launch on Windows 11 Pro is lively wallpaper for animated backgrounds. LMDE7 has video option with a widget that gets added to Background options to play animated wallpaper.

Just a quick comment on the article showing images of the fancy RAM modules with colour changing LEDs. I just don't understand the fad of colour changing motherboards, PSU and CPU cooler fans etc, when most of the time you are looking at the screen not the computer case! I have a CoolerMaster Silencio 650 case, so all modular lighting is turned off on the motherboard and PSU fan as there is no point to having them 'lit'.

My Timex Sinclair ZX81 came with a whopping 1k of RAM. But I eventually saved up and purchased the 16k add-on memory module, which was about the size of 3 decks of cards. It connected to a 13-inch TV for display and saved programs that were meticulously typed in from a magazine article onto a standard cassette player. These were the EARLY days of personal computing, late 1970s/early 1980s, the era of the Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80, pre IBM PC and Apple IIe. I've been doing this all my life, and am still at it.

I have installed Q4OS ”aquarius" on a machine I built in 2006. It is an MSI board maxed out at 2 GB RAM (400 MHz), Single Athlon64 processor running @2.2 GHz and an EVGA silent graphics card, nvidia 512 Mb AGP 8x, and running the Plasma version. Currently at 5.9. Have to drop to TTY console for updates otherwise it would freeze in Discover.

On a side note, recently sold my Amiga 1500. I had upgraded it with a SCSI controller for a 1 Gb Seagate SCSI drive.
The controller could hold 8 Mb of ZIP RAM. It booted quicker than my AMD rig with a 400 MHz processor and 384 Mb RAM running Windows 98 SE and power down times quicker than any other computer. Amigas jus had an on/off switch.

Nov 83, Coleco Adam 64k ram. I was impressed that it had the same tape drive as a theatrical lighting console I was programming on. Adam was released to make the 1983 Christmas season but it had little software written for it and hardware issues. The product reviews were awful.

The Coleco hardware issues were due to the fact that an electronics engineer designed the hardware. He didn't understand that manufacture and assembly of plastic and metal parts requires the services of a mechanical engineer. There are dimensional tolerances that have to be considered due to the differences in thermal expansion both during manufacture and assembly of the physical parts. This is "insider" information. The actual source must remain anonymous.

Pour ma part j'ai pris le parti d'avoir 32 Go de RAM car le mini pc que je visais n'avait de possibilité d'extension.

Avec windows 11, concrêtement avec 1 jeu (Wow) et des logiciels de bureautique ouverts (y compris OndeDrive, whatsapp, un VPN) , je suis déjà à 55% de mémoire => à 16Go j'aurais ramé un peu ...
Quelques aberrations, je n'ouvre même pas Edge qu'il consomme déjà autour de 300Mo de mémoire ! et le widget météo consomme aussi près de 1Go car trop de publicité avec, celui là je l'ai viré.

De base suivez la recommandation de l'article, et faites atention à voir si la ram est extensible ou pas. Et prenez des SSD rapides, ça vaut le coup aussi.

1978 Tandy TRS-80 with 4K Ram came first. Later upgraded to a whopping 128k so I could bank switch two 64k blocks!
TRS-DOS operating system and machine code on a Z-80 chip was efficient for any documents, spreadsheets or databases.

Conserving memory usage was a way of life and always paid dividends in performance. That is still true today. This system with additional drives continued in service running businesses until finally retired in 2000. Try that today with Windows!

Any Linux distribution will perform really well with modest 8GB RAM and brilliantly with more - compared to today’s memory hogging and memory wasteful-by-design Windows OS’s which choke on anything less than 16 GB.

Keeping multiple windows open in any OS just because you can - is lazy, inefficient, wasteful and expensive in RAM. Heavy CAD/CAM users, serious video editors and rocket scientists excepted.

Vous oubliez tous ceux qui travaillent en config multi écrans car c'est pratique d'avoir le logiciel d'un côté et ses documents de référence de l'autre, ou d'avoir une fenêtre / écran sur chaque SI (interne et partnenaire par exemple) tout en ayant un 3ème écran sur teams ou équivalent.

Certes ce n'est pas pour le plaisir mais pour raisons professionnelles :)

Can I be included in the exceptions? I don't use Zorin OS any more but currently writing the Unofficial Manual for Zorin 18.1 Come using TextMaker 2024. But this means I have to use Okular to extract text from earlier version of Unofficial Manual, and have a VM of ZorinOS in 'Try Zorin' mode running in virt-manager. In respect of 'Night Light' because this is not possible to run on a VM (unless you have a dedicated second graphics card) you have to take a screenshot with Spectacle, copy and paste into GIMP on host machine and then adjust the Gamma to mimic what a desktop with Night Light looks like.

Additionally I still help out QTVIs (Qualified Teachers of the Vision Impaired) after 19 years of modifying texts for students from 3 to 25, and in lockdown was extremely grateful I had purchased SoftMaker Office 2018 Professional for the princely sum of just under £25 in November before lockdown. This involved using Okular and TextMaker and GIMP, the latter used to modify images in reading books, the trickiest bit was getting those images that span two pages at the bottom, or left and right margin images. Low-vision readers need everything left aligned so pictures would be partway down the page or if large, on a page of their own, so they get to see what their sighted peers see. With some students, 'noise' created by too much detail requires the removal of most of the background imagery, focusing on principal characters in the imagery and avoid background distraction which as well as causing visual issues would slow down reading. I would also use additional apps, such as the command line tool 'ocrmypdf' especially useful where PDFs contained images of text, and I was very grateful for 'pdftk' which is a command line tool for repairing corrupt PDFs. This came to the rescue as I was working on a mock AS Physics paper when I was having issues with pdfStudio Pro which actually turned out to be a failing hard drive (and working from home!). The replacement hard drive arrived in time and so pdftk, LibreOffice Draw helped save the day. (LibreOffice Draw can read PDFs and MS Publisher files but not edit). LibreOffice Draw was used to rescue the modified diagrams I originally made in Inkscape, from the corrupted PDF without having to start over. The mock paper was completed on deadline. Phew!

My first computer was a Timex Sinclair with a membrane keyboard and it had
1K of built in RAM. Yep One K. Ram on BASIC for an OS.
And a person had to manually type in the
program to be used (very slow process) but it worked. However the Timex
Sinclair was quickly eclipsed by the Commodore Vic-20 with expandable Ram
capability and the urge to have more and more Ram has continued. My first PC had 256K that I quickly upgraded to 512K which was a HUGE amount of Ram for
the day. Fun times.

Just reminded me of my first proper computer, an Amiga 1500, 2 floppy drives, no hard disk and 1 Mb RAM. I was a Health & Safety Officer for a Local Government TU and would create monthly Health & Safety Bulletins on the Amiga using an Amiga Format giveaway, Page Setter 2. Each page took 20 minutes to print on my trusty Canon BJ-200!

Husband's computer was an unfortunate lemon right off the assembly line. After two years some of the keys had to be hit two or three times to get them to type, the screen started flashing blackouts occasionally and the fan had intermittent sessions of grinding like a cow in labor. All this with a terabyte hard drive and only 4GB of RAM. Are you kidding?

In this case the speed at which programs would run was ridiculous. In the time it took me to run all my weekly utility checks on my computer, I could only run one of the same programs on his. Keeping in mind that it was the only program running.

My 8GB was ample but we ended up replacing both units, mine with 16GB and his with 8GB and his flies just as fast as mine. I mean WOW!

What I'd like to see here, if you have it archived please point me to it, or put out something that instructs me to the best procedure for recycling or disposing of a couple old computers. Thanks for another great article.

Disposing of old computers will depend where you live and in which country. I live in Sheffield in the UK and there is a company that recycles old computers and puts GNU/Linux on them if practical. Check to see if there are any organisations that recycle for third world countries.

And before you dispose of them why not try GNU/Linux yourself? I highly recommend Q4OS Plasma with Look Switcher, MX-Linux 25.1 KDE Plasma (whatever you setup in the live session can be remembered post install!) and Linux Mint Debian Edition with kde-standard post install.

My first unit was a 386 turbo. It was upgraded at time of purchase to 1 MG of ram, and a 120 MG hard drive. Added a cd-rom when they first came out - very expensive. This was a 1x speed.
Current unit has 32 GB of memory, and I pin the memory usage on a regular basis. This is because I am a gamer, and this is a category of users for which the maximum amount of Ram is crucial.

the ram drive was the way to speed up the program operation and then the computer not waiting to fetch data and write data to the hard drive. the CPU is clocked to run at a specific speed and the whole system operates at the speed of the slowest component on the required hardware and the hard drives are now ram drives

I think this depends on your requirements and specially in the use of local AI or other tough software requirements, like for work in AutoCad and Revit. In my case I have 2 computers I work with, both heavily invested in AI capabilities and running local models. My W11 computer has 96 RAM and 8 GB VRAM on an Nvidia card. Running 5-6 providers on Cloud AI and an agentic desktop that uses Ollama to run local models (I dont have much VRAM, so I can get to 9B models only). My linux computer (Zorin Os 18.1 Pro - paid license) has 32 GB RAM but only 4 GB VRAM, so it can only run 4B models locally, but on the rest is basically the same as my Windows. I sync all the files so I can jump from one to another and SoftMaker's Office Pro is a big part of being able to have this flexibility.
The BIG question in the future is whether or not computers will start coming with continuous memory (RAM + VRam in one package) so that the memory is fully utilized for AI local models. Mac Mini has this feature, but it is not that mainstream. There are a number of computers based on the new AMD AI architecture that come with continous memory. Let's hope that in the future this becomes the norm for laptop environments.

4-8 GB of RAM is enough to run a computer, practically all Linux distributions work normally with 8 GB of memory, using any desktop environment, but with a properly chosen desktop, even 4 GB is enough. I have been using Linux for over ten years and it is suitable for practically all tasks, using Linux is just a matter of attitude, not of technical capabilities.

I know I'll get criticism here, but when my previous desktop PC couldn't be upgraded to Windows 11, I decided to make the jump to 64GB with the replacement. My logic was that I like to own PC's for a long time and apps are bound to use more and more memory as time goes by. Plus I like to keep lots of browser tabs open. The extra memory didn't cost significantly more than than the 32GB version of the same machine. And so far I don't regret my decision.

When I did my last full upgrade in 2021 I went for 64GB. Doing a lot of ray tracing which was all on the CPU so coupling that with a 12 core i9 seemed a good idea. I won't be upgrading again for a while as I couldn't afford to have the same now, certainly not better!

My first computer was a Commodore VIC-20 with 3.5k of ram (actually 4k but the O/S and screen memory ate into it.

Anyone who does any photo or video editing should check the system requirements of the software to be used. The stated minimum is just that -- the minimum to do anything. If you don't want to wait in between each action, at least double the amount of RAM.

Je ne suis pas d'accord avec l'article sur certains points. Par, exemple, on voit bien la différence entre le même PC avec 16G de ram ou 32g, voire 64g. J'utilise ce type de pc depuis suffisamment longtemps.
Les questions à se poser sont, à mon avis, notamment les suivantes :
1/ As tu besoin de travailler en multâches avec plusieurs applications ouvertes en même temps ?
2/ Ton travaille se limte t-il a de la bureautique simple (traitement de texte, tableur, présentation simple, email ?

5/ Quel Os pour quel travail (Windows, linux etc)
Bref, voilà pour quelques questions de base.
Pour ma part, un PC avec 16g aura tendance à 'saturer".
La question est donc, à mon avis, celle de l'usage recherché plutôt que le seul constat du prix de la mémoire.

It depends on many thing including the OS. Back in the day I ran a 16 user Pick System on a ps/2 Model 80 with 640K and user got sub-second response at their terminals. Pick was multi-user but single tasking. People running unix and MUMPS had the same experience. Add graphical UIs, 3D games, browsers that add a process for each tab and memory needs skyrocket. I never run less than 64GB is the platform allows it.

My first "PC" was an Epson HX-20. Loved it. Instant on! It had 16K RAM, plenty for what it could do. It had a simple word processor, tape drive, printer, 20 x 4 character screen, serial port, and BASIC. The small screen cracked after about three years, so I had to retire it.

This article caused me to check the SDRAM on my current desktop. I was shocked to find only 2 GB! The PC started life as a Windows 7 machine probably 15 years ago, but has run Linux for years with no distracting sluggishness. Mostly Internet browsing, word processing, spreadsheets, Python programming, and some video editing. I saw some speed gain when I changed to an SSD, but not a striking difference.

I did upgrade:

to 512 bytes,

and added a VDU card so's I could put a Merry Christmas message on our TV screen via the RD converter.

Fun days.

p.s. programmed in opcodes, entered one at a time by front panel switches :-)

This is the wrong way to judge components. You need to assess usefulness in three years, when the next major updates emerge, and six years, when the hardware needs to be replaced. Current RAM supply problems will be solved by new formats now appearing at trade shows. AI models on personal desktops will call for 128GB.

I started in 1970 with a PDP8 minicomputer with just 8kB of memory for everything. It was really surprising what you could do with that, even control complex pieces of electrical equipment in real time if you were prepared to program in assembly language.
Later when PCs arrived with the MSDOS operating system in the early 1980s, complex electronic circuit simulations could be carried out with a program using just 512kB of memory total. And the program supported graphics!
What we have now is just more and more 'bloatware'
