Hi,
I had the 2008 and the 2010 versions installed on my PC. My C: disk was full so I decided to remove the 2008 version among other things. But now .doc, .docx, .ppt, .xls are not associated any longert with the 2010 version. How could I restore these associations ?
Thanks.

To associate a file type like .doc or .xls permanently with an specific program (for example, TextMaker or PlanMaker), please do the following steps under Windows XP (these steps are almost identically under Windows Vista and Windows 7):

1. Right click on the desired file type and choose "open with" and then "Choose Program..."
2. Select the desired program/application. In case you cannot find the program in that list, click on "Browse" and navigate to the installation folder, for example C:\Program Files\SoftMaker Office) and select the desired .exe file, e.g. TextMaker.exe or PlanMaker.exe
3. Enable "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click "OK".

From now on all files of this file type will be opened with this chosen application by default (for example via double click).

Thanks. I forgot to mention I already tried that but something funny happened : even if I browse to Planmaker.exe, it won't be selected and won't even be present in the list of recommended programs. My Xp insisted on using an old OpenOffice version I once used. Same issue for Presentations.

I finally did the following : dig out the old installer, run it, select "Repair" and reapply the latest patch. Problem seems solved now.

In this case a new instllation could help. At the end of the setup you can choose the file types you want to associate with SoftMaker Office.

Thanks. I guess the file association setup only appears at the end of the full install because it didn't with the repair mode.

Yes, it appears at the very end of the setup (not repair mode).

this does not work if you use, as i do, the portable version: there is no installation that could ask for any association.

but i have the same problem as mentioned above: using the windows system to fix associations lets me browse to PLAN/TEXTmaker allright, but it does not enter them into the 'OPEN WITH' file list.

what do i do? there is a specific reason why i have to stick to the PORTABLE version. i am actually using a lot of portable versions of other progs, all of them can be attached to a specific file to open them, just PLAN/TEXTmaker not.

any idea why? last resort, change something in the registry?

... and it is really possible that within 7 days nobody, specially anyone related to SOFTMAKER, has the slightest idea or suggestion about this?

It is not easy to change the file associations in Windows Mobile but if you google a bit you will find some instructions how to do it:

sven, tks. as i pointed out before, i am using for some specific reasons a lot of portable progs, NONE of them has any problem having files associated with them the standard way.

not the larger ones (OPEN / LIBRI offc etc), not the smaller ones (abiword, gnumeric, many other) - so pls tell me why it is so difficult on plan/textmaker?

will follow your leads, lets see how far i get.

I think Sven got confused when you mentioned "portable" and gave you tips concerning our Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) version.

It seems however that you are using the Windows version in portable mode. Right?

If yes, then look at the second posting in this thread which describes how to associate files. Please note that this runs counter to the idea of a "portable" installation: it will leave traces (file associations) on the host computer. You need to decide if you want that. Without setting file associations, there is no way to associate files.

sven, all your tips lead me too are systems for mobile phones and similar, i am talking though about normal computers, WIN XP and 7 ! and the SoftmakerPortable progs!

anything on that?

martin, yes, your mssg came in while i wrote this. 'Portable Progs' is the general term as you describe it, i am sorry, but i never heard it for programs on mobile phones! it the 'prog' that is portable, not the machine!

and yes, the system as described in post #2 is the one used to force associations, and it works on all of the ones i have tried, but not on TEXT/PLANmaker Portable!

have to admit, am a bit lost here.

"Does not work" is vague.

What exactly happens when you follow the procedure? And what happens when you double-click on a document file then?

yes it is, vague. but it describes it best. because when you follow all steps as out lined, incl browsing to for example PlanMaker.exe, setting the tick on 'Always ...', then you OK it, and ... nothing happens. it does not open the XLS file, and next time you open the 'Open with ...' menu, PlanMaker is NOT on the list.

and doubleclicking the XLS file, brings, on a clean computer, again the 'Open with ... ' menu, and on an older setup, opens the file with whatever it used to do before.

actually the same reaction as was described above (post #3) '' ... already tried that but something funny happened : even if I browse to Planmaker.exe, it won't be selected and won't even be present in the list of recommended programs ... ''.

he then was able to overcome it by re-installing SoftMaker, and thereby fixing the association in the registry, but this cannot be done with the Portable Version, as this does not get > installed < at all.

the portable version takes you one minute to set up, why dont you give it a try ?
