I've come upon what I think is a glitch in TextMaker 2012's formation of hyperlinks. If I highlight the URL, go into Format-->Link, put the URL in the box that pops up, and click OK, the live link appears. However, when I move to the next line to continue writing, everything I write is treated as if it, too, is a hyperlink! It's blue, it's underlined, etc. This doesn't happen all the time, but it does most of the time. It's a royal pain to have to try to undo the bogus link, change the font color, and undo the underlining. I don't recall this ever happening in TextMaker 2010. Is there a way to prevent this from happening, short of returning to TextMaker 2010? :(

I thought I'd provide more information about the problem(s) I'm having with TextMaker2012's making of hypertext links. First of all, I'm using TextMaker2012 (rev 652) on Win7 64-bit. What I said in my initial message is still true. I've noticed two other things:

1) Although SoftMaker's publicity claims that a new feature in TextMaker2012 is that it offers "Automatic conversion of URLs to hyperlinks," as far as I can tell, this doesn't work. I have Tools --> Options --> Edit "Format URLs as hyperlinks" checked (indeed, it was checked at the start), but when I type a URL or paste one in, nothing happens. I also tried UNchecking that option, and nothing happened.

2) If I make a URL a live hyperlink by highlighting the URL, going into Format and clicking on Link, then putting the URL in the box that pops up, and then closing the box by clicking OK, usually (though not always) the URL becomes a live link underlined and in blue. But, as I explained in my first message, if I move to the next line, whatever I type there usually is also a hyperlink, complete with blue color and underlining. At times I've tried to highlight this second line's text and choose Remove Link, but all that does is make it no longer a hyperlink, but it is still in blue and underlined, as if it were a hyperlink. And if instead of choosing Remove Link, I simply change the text color to black and remove the underlining, it and everything else I type continues to be a hyperlink! If I click on it, it goes to the site whose URL appeared in the line above. See the screenshot I've attached.

Since I'm in the process of collaborating with other people to whom I'm constantly sending text with live links, this is a continual and increasingly annoying problem. I'd be most grateful for a solution.

Sven, thank you for the PM. I tried what you suggested there, but it did not work. I am attaching here a test file that I just made after following your suggestion. I would have sent it in a PM, but I could find no way to attach a file to a PM reply, nor do I see an email address for you. I do have one thought: what file format do you save your documents in? I have saved them in MS Word's .doc format. I tried three different .doc formats (.docx, 2003, and 97/2000), but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Tried your document.

I had no problem if after going to next line I went to format character and changed from underline by unticking underline and by changing colur to black from blue.

No Site at All
http://www.awis.org/
the text here is still in blue, underlined, and a live link
How does this seem?

Hope that helps

Perhaps even easier visually is that you will notice that when you go to the next line the text colour is blue and the underline is on in the second toolbar. Just click off the underline, and then choose the black font colour instead of the blue from the colour box just right from the font size box.

Thanks, John, for your response, but I'm afraid it doesn't help. First of all, I should NOT have to manually change the next line from blue to black and remove the underlining. But what's even worse is that even when I do that, the black, no-longer-underlined text is still a live link, as I explained and illustrated in the second message in this thread. In order to get what should be the normal appearance in the line after the live URL, I have to 1) manually change the color back to black 2) manually remove the underlining, and 3) go to Format --> Remove Link and remove the link. This is certainly not the way this should work.

And the fact also remains that the new feature advertised for TextMaker2012--that it automatically treats URLs as live links--does not work.

You stll have to right click and take the hyperlink out of the box on the hyperlink page which ever way you do it, so format is still probably the best way to avoid it being a continuation of the hyperlink.

I meant to say 'on the hyperlink tab of the format pop up box' (not page as I said above) - I pressed the submit by mistake instead of preview button.

Hope that helps. Basically use the character format option to remove the hyperlink because neither spaces, nor new lines, break the connection to the hyperlink.

I do see your problem. Hyperlinking in TextMaker works like any other character formatting which means that it will continue in the next line if it was active in the original line. I'll talk to the developers how to change the behavior (meaning that hyperlinking would behave different from other formatting).

But there is an easy solution for you in TextMaker 2012: Go to Tools, Options, Edit and turn on "Format URLs as hyperlinks". This will automatically turn everything that you type and which looks like a URL into a working hyperlink, and when you press Enter, the hyperlink actually is turned off.

[EDIT: As an addendum, Format/Standard resets the character formatting at the given caret position, and it would also turn a rampant hyperlink off].

Martin, you are a life-saver!! What you've said above solves the problem. The odd thing is that I did have that option checked (I think it comes checked by default), but I assumed it didn't work because when I pasted or wrote a URL, nothing happened. For some reason it didn't occur to me to press Enter. Only when I went looking for another way to create the hyperlink (via Format --> Link) did Softmaker create the link. I then pressed Enter, and everything I typed after that was also a link. But you've shown me that I don't have to do any of that, that all I have to do is put in the URL and hit Enter. The link becomes live AND the next line is normal--black, not underlined, and not a live link. That's exactly what I want.
MANY MANY THANKS!!

I am interested in the outcome as it shows how good stuff much is hidden - my hyper linking was switched on, on my first try with the sample and switched off when I tried the second time.

More than happy with the outcome of this thread as it has reminded me to go back to the options once a week to remind myself of what is possible. Just downloading the new android beta and looking for the improvements in that.
