Struggling to reproduce my trusty styles from another application, and I have a conceptual question. When I want to work with several levels of numbered list, which is the correct approach:

• define one style that includes definitions for several levels, then use the indent/outdent tool
• define one style per level

If it's the first answer, "one style - definitions for several levels", my next question is about the Bullets and Numbering > Numbered lists tab. Do I have to define:

• one entry per level
• one entry including definitions for several levels

I am finding all of this very confusing! especially using the term "additional indent" for what (according to your own documentation) seems to be nothing more than the basic left indent for the paragraph …

What I'm trying to achieve ...

When you have a list with hierarchical levels, i.e.

1
1.1
1.2
2
2.1
2.2

then you better use one list with several levels. Call the numbered lists tab and create a numbering style. In the following dialog modify the single levels by selecting them in the 'level' or 'preview' control, then change the settings in the right part of the dialog.

The 'additional indent' is _added_ to the original pgf's indent. The list can be applied to several pgfs with different left indent, the numbering indent must not destroy the original indent. This is done the same way in Word.

Just between you and me, I'm not automatically convinced by the observation "that's the way something's done in Word ..." <rofl>

First extra question … two styles with the same left margin setting, one with numbering and one without. The numbered style does not include any "Additional indent". The markers in the ruler do not change when I move the cursor between the two styles.

Why are the numbered paragraphs indented differently from the non-numbered paragraphs?

That's a design decision, bullets are painted before the indent.

... with the result that the information displayed in the ruler is incorrect, the measurements displayed in the styles dialogues for bullets are misleading, and the user has to do extra work to correct an outdent he never requested! HTML bullets and numbering do not function in this way, nor does any of the mainframe and PC systems I have used over the last twenty-five years; where MS Word is concerned, that's up to and including 2007, so if they've decided to outdent bullets my criticism applies to them too. (Yes, I can see them trembling in fear …)

Progress, thanks to your tips: I seem to have a stable style for ordered lists where the numbers and margins at level 1 are now the way I want them.

The next part of my quest is to do with multi-levels. I've read the documentation, of course … and read your replies in this thread: but I still cannot work out how to set up indents for the second level. Could you consider the screenshot and patiently explain how to set up the second-level list? Thanks in advance!


By the way: I've noticed while preparing these screenshots that the Numbering dialogue shows the actual style-name in the title bar, while the Paragraph styles dialogue is labelled just Paragraph. Perhaps both dialogues should display the name of the style the user is working with.

Press Ctrl-M to increase and Ctrl-Shift-M to decrease the level or call the numbering dialog and set the list level (this is directly in the property sheet, you can also click the preview).

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I knew about using the Indent options, but what I cannot work out is how to define the settings for each level of indent: because I have set my own margins for level 1, I need to adjust the margins for the other levels.

Call the numbering dialog and select the level you want in the preview or the slider above the preview. Then change the settings to the right (these settings apply to one level, not for the whole numbering).
