Is it possible to cross reference a caption or an object, pointing to their number not the page where it is? I write engineering articles and constantly I need to write something like: 'As we can see in Eqn. 4 ....' I don't see how to do this in Textmaker

In Insert > Cross reference... there is a selection to show page or show number. Does this solve your issue?

You could work with bookmarks and link directly to the number. Just select the text of the caption and invoke Insert=>Bookmark and give it a name. Then select the text that refers to that bookmark (in your case 'As we can see in Eqn. 4 ....' ) ,invoke Format=>Link and select the bookmark.

There aren't even references to "Captions" in "Cross reference". And references to "Objects" are limited to "Page", not "Numbers".

This procedure will create a link to the Eqn. 4. But, of course, it won't work when the document is printed. The reader of the printed version cannot use it. He needs a printed cross reference, so he can understand the document.
I have worked with Word and OpenOffice. They provide the ability to cross reference captions of Tables, Objects, etc. I think there must be a way to do this in Text Maker. It is so important for scientific and engineering articles!

I will open a feature request for this.
