Hello,

I installed softmaker-office-2010-591.i386.rpm on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.1. Launching either textmaker, planmaker, or presentations results in a crash with the following message (before a window appears):

> presentations
*** glibc detected *** /usr/share/office2010/presentations: free(): invalid next size (normal): 0x088d2d10 ***
/usr/bin/presentations: line 3: 20609 Aborted "/usr/share/office2010"/presentations "$@"

It is a 64bit linux, but other 32bit binaries run fine:

> uname -a
Linux linaurora 2.6.18-53.el5 #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 16:34:19 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any idea how I can fix this?

Best regards,
David

Does the crash also happen if you use the tgz archive to install the Office?

Hello,

yes, both the rpm and the tgz version crash in the same manner. These are the two textmaker binaries, for instance:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 vonstett jsbg 10706952 Nov 18 17:00 /tmp/soff/textmaker
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10690444 Nov 18 17:28 /usr/share/office2010/textmaker

Best regards,
David

I referred that problem to our developers. In the meantime I would suggest to use another Linux distribution like Fedora or Ubuntu.

Yes, at home I use Debian, and Softmaker Office runs without problems!
But unfortunately, I cannot easily change the distro on my office computer...

So I'll wait what the developers think about this... Thanks!

An additional observation: I removed Softmaker Office 2010, and installed the now freely available 2008 version, and it works fine the first time I run textmaker. It asks for the license key, and then the main window appears. But when I close the application and run it a second time, it crashes with the same error message on the console as the 2010 version (except that now the window frame very briefly appears, which wasn't the case with the 2010 version).

When I delete the .softmaker directory, the process starts again: I can run textmaker once, and it crashes the second time.

Does this give you any clue?

Best regards,
David

You can run any of our applications with the -debug parameter. This will create a log file (tmlog.txt, pmlog.txt, prlog.txt) that protocols the launch process, and you can see where it aborts (if it is really during the launch).

OK, thanks... I created two log files (from Office 2008 and 2010), see attachments. Textmaker 2008 runs slightly further than 2010: the window frame appears very briefly with Textmaker 2008. (Only one version had been installed at a time, and the other one has been previously deinstalled!)

Just a thought: Could this be related to the fact that Textmaker detects about 750 printers via CUPS (which is correct)?

Hmmm, attaching files doesn't seem to work for me, or am I too stupid?! So here are the logs:

I asked the developers and will inform you here as soon as I have more information.

750 printers can definitely cause problems, since all printer data is read in TextMaker. We hope that this will be fixed with the next Service Pack for Linux (this can still take some weeks).

Is there an easy way to keep textmaker etc. from scanning for printers? I guess for checking I could temporarily shut down CUPS...

Voila, that was the solution! After stopping CUPS, textmaker starts up normally!

Unfortunately, however, this is not a permanent solution. Any suggestions how to go from here? And no, I won't be able to convince the computer department to change the global setup of the printing system in any major way, I'm afraid...

Cheers,
David

Please wait for the next service pack. There should be an bugfix for that issue included.

OK. Is there a rough estimate for when this service pack should be released?

And meanwhile, there is no easy way to tell textmaker & Co. to ignore CUPS?

Best regards,
David

There is no release date yet for the next service pack. I asked the developers for a workaround.
