Hello SoftOfficers:

I have a spreadsheet that I used in 2010, and would like to copy it to another sheet. There I will make the changes particular to the New Year, so that I can use it again in 2011 with new data.

I have worked out all the formatting, etc, in 2010, including varying column widths for each column.

I have tried using the Paste-Special command, and all the stuff carries to the new sheet, except the Column Widths. I am sure that there is a way to carry out this feature, but cannof find out how to do it.

Your help will be much appreciated! :)

Is your new file an empty file where you just wanna paste the content of the old one? If so you can just save the current file with another name (File=>Save as) to create a copy of it and use this copy for 2011.

Thank you Sven for your suggestion.

In fact, that is what I normally do when I create a new file for a new year. I just used the change from one year to the next as an example in order to keep my question simple.

However, in the circumstance that I am actually working with, I need to keep the same set of column headings, and all their formatting in several different sheets in the same file. For example, I am in 2011, and need to have a report for each Quarter. Sheet 1 will be Quarter 1, Sheet 2 = Quarter 2, etc. Sheet 5 will be a summary sheet, where I will take the results in Column 1 from each of the four Quarters, and get a total for the year. So in this situation, multiple files would not work.

When you right-click on "Sheet1" (or whatever your first sheet is named) in the lower left corner, there is a "Copy" command to make a copy of the whole sheet. This copy keeps the column widths.

Good deal, indeed.

HOWEVER, this brings up an idea to make this easier for users.

The software might benefit, and the user too, from a "tool-tip" popping up saying or describing in short order what the command will do.

Something like:

"This "Copy" command will make a copy of the whole sheet. This copy keeps information such as xxxx, xxxx, and the column widths."

Something on that order of tool-tip information would let users know what that command will do, etc.

Ease-of-user-use is what I am striving at, that is.

Joe
