I have just installed and started Textmaker, done nothing to configure the program from default.

The font display on screen (and also on the preview) is wierd. It looks like very very tight kerning has been applied: most letters are touching each other...

I've attached a screenshot showing the image...

Any idea what is happening here?

Thanks

Richard

Just letting you know that there is no image attached for us to look at. Plus, are you sure this is not just the 10pt TNR font? I always set my custom template to 12pt, which I think it much more becoming, especially for Times New Roman.

(BTW: I do notice that when I customize the default template (normal.tmv) there's a slight 'double-take' or lag when TextMaker starts up. If I have it on default factory settings (10pt) it loads quicker and smoother. It's slight, but shows me my customization acts like an 'overlay' of the default template, and doesn't load the same way as the original default template. But that's a slight and other matter entirely.)

Anyway it is attached now.

First idea: Is the document font installed in your system? If not, TextMaker chooses some substitute font which can result in effects like this one.

As I said, I didn't do anything to modify the installation: everything was default. The original font was Times Roman; I changed it to Arial (the image posted) to see if it made any difference, but it did not. I looked to see if there was any character spacing or kerning,or paragraph formatting specified but all was default and not obviously incorrect.

Does this weird view occur with every document you open? Also if you start a new document from scratch?
If not: Where did you get this specific document from? Did you write it yourself or did it exist before?
Did I get you right that the document was originally written in Times New Roman and you changed the font to Arial?
Was the screen view just as funny when the document was still in Times New Roman? How did you change the font - via the icon bar after selecting the text or by changing a character or paragraph style?
In other words: What did you do exactly to get this view?

I've tried opening a bunch of documents and yes, generally they all look the same.

The picture was the same with the original times, and when I changed it to arial.

I selected the text and changed the font from the toolbar...

It was a file I had produced but it is the same with other files. I've attached the readme.txt from the original install and a second screenshot of the file when I open it: same issue.

Thanks Richard :?:

Thanks: I will do that. I'm having a bit of trouble attaching documents but will make sure it is proper now.

I should just comment that I've been doing this on my laptop: Dell Studio 15 with Win7. For completeness I thought I would try it on another computer so I've installed it on my desktop: a homebuilt with Win XP. The results (i.e. the problem with the font display) is exactly the same: all distorted.

Cheers

R

Just to update this topic with the latest: thanks to Sven I reinstalled windows fonts (the arial and times roman) which made no difference.

However when I went to a different font - this time Revival ATT (a serif font) and Helvitica - the screen display was normal and proper...

I can't explain the change as I had tried a different font before and it did not work properly, however these fonts do. I actually can't explain anything, but the programs are now functional so I'll carry on with them! Would be nice to understand it .

Thanks to all.

Richard :)
