I have an HP iPaq 110 (new as of a couple months ago). I was a former Palm Zire user for years using Documents to Go. I happily found a replacement to HP's Pocket Word with Text Maker 2008 that I purchased from Handango.com about a month ago.

It dawned on me just the other day that Text Maker 2008 takes a full 7 seconds to open a word doc. :? I checked my old Palm Pilot (docs to go) & it nearly immediately opens the same files. (Docs to Go doesn't have a version avail for WM6 classic.)

I don't want to loose all my carefully chosen settings in version 2008 to load a trial version of 2010. So could you please tell me if the new version has an improved startup time?

I'm going crazy looking into alternatives when it dawned on me to ask this question. Please please help! Thank you!!

We imprived the performance of our applications in SoftMaker Office 2010 for Windows Mobile but it also depends on the CPU speed and amount of free RAM available on your device. Also it depends on how large the file is you want to open with TextMaker.
I would suggest to check it out with the trial version of Office 2010. You will not lose your settings in TextMaker 2008 as TextMaker 2010 uses different files to store the settings.

So if I install the trial of 2010, will it make me uninstall the 2008 version? If so, then when I uninstall the 2008 version, are you saying that automatically all my settings will be saved? Or do I have to be sure to take that option in the uninstall? Thank you.

btw- TextMaker 2008 takes 6 seconds to start up without a document opening with it after rebooting the device & no other documents or pgms open at the same time. The HP iPaq 110 has 64 RAM, 256 ROM, CPU is PXA310 at 624 Mhz.

I'm awaiting confirmation of my prev reply so I can feel better about installing the 2010 trial. I took off from work to understand my new iPaq device. So I have spent a lot of time tweaking the settings for 2008 version and I'm very scared to loose them. Are they stored in the: WM_Documents\SoftMaker\Settings\ directory? I will back that up too just in case. Thanks!!

You will not lose your settings in TextMaker 2008 if you install TextMaker 2010 trial. 64 MB is the minimum requirement to run TextMaker 2008 or 2010 on a windows Mobile device. That's probably the reason why TextMaker needs some time to open other files.

Wow. I have now learned that buying a brand new device only leaves me just barely covered for minimum software requirements. What an eye-opener. I hadn't been checking that.

So - now that I know the minimum is 64MB RAM for BOTH versions ('08 & '10), it seems i have no reason to expect the 2010 version to start up any faster, right?

Thank you very much!

It depends on the document. We improved all applications of SoftMaker Office 2010 for Windows Mobile a bit but Windows Mobile has exceptionally bad memory handling to begin with.

Thank you very much for your reply. It sounds worth it to try the 2010 version. I will report my findings back.

I know this is a bit off topic, but since you touched on the bad memory mngmt of WM, I now am wondering, have you heard of any Memory Optimizing pgm that's useful for Windows Mobile?

There are some "RAM Booster" applications out there for Windows Mobile (just google for it) but we never used such applications here and cannot say if they are useful or not.

Thank you.

btw - It seems to me that the 2010 TextMaker still takes a full 6-seconds to open (without opening any file with it). Possibly other features are improved in speed. I will use it for day-to-day use and compare. The main feature I was interested in seeing improved though was being able to see my Word documents quicker, at-a-glance.
