It is often required when for example quoting some text but not all is required, as below, however when the first dot of the elipsis is typed the quote assumes a full stop and reverses.

"...and he was..."

The requirement is that after the first stop any non space should ensure that the quote is right and a space should make it left.

The solution for your problem is not to use three single dots but the horizontal ellipsis character … (ASCII 201, U+2026).
You may either insert it by Insert :arrow2: Symbol or by typing Shift+201 on the num pad or, if you need it quite often, define your own key for it (Insert :arrow2: Symbol, click on the character and then click the "Change..." button).

Thank you Jossi for that solution. It is remarkable what hidden gems lurk beneath... :)
however shift anything does not do anything, the usual method would be Alt 0201, but that does not give the correct character. I cannot locate the number in symbol which seems to go from hex 01FF to 02C6 no sign of 020x.
I am assuming that this character should occur in every text font.
I am obviously missing something here.

[Edit] Found the elipsis in symbol at 2026 Unicode which I don't want. Thought also that maybe you used decimal and so tried C9 but that is also wrong.
??????????????????

Sorry, my mistake. I confused the Apple ASCII and Windows 1252 character sets. It's actually Alt+0133.

My thanks Jossi it works but...

I cannot assign a shortcut because the character 0133 as an elipsis does not appear in the 'insert symbol' table except unicode 2026. Further assistance would be very useful.

Hi Donone,

I've just tried this and I think it works fine. Apologies if I'm mistaken in what you're trying to do.

I went to INSERT > SYMBOL

Found the character 2026, clicked on "Change..." and then assigned a shortcut of "CTRL . " (Seemed like a sensible shortcut).

Anyway, I can now type "...Hello..." just by typing "<CTRL-.>Hello<CTRL-.>" and it displays with the correct direction of "

Best regards.

Ah, just re-read your posts.

Am I correct in saying that the symbol for ... (2026) is not the correct character for you?

Thank you for your input LittleOtter.
I said that I did not want the Unicode version of ... because it takes up two bytes and may not be compatible with all software. I plumped for the ALT 0133 which is the method I was used to in Word etc.
However, using a laptop, the problem of accidentally leaving Num on is a curse.
I therefore want to use that but cannot attach my own shortcut because 0133 does not occur (I know not why) in the table provided, though it does appear in other ascii tables elsewhere.

Perhaps you can suggest another way of attaching a shortcut other than clicking on the symbol in the table.

Alt+0133 is an old Win ANSI character position. It is not defined in Unicode anymore, and TextMaker automatically converts it to Unicode 2026. So, you don't save anything by trying to force Alt+0133.

(When you save as a non-Unicode text file, 2026 is converted back to 0133 anyway).
