Although my Shorter Oxford Dictionary says that "meter" is also correct, "metre" should not be marked as a mistake.

'Meter' is American usage. There's nothing in the least wrong with American usage but one selects the UK English dictionary for a reason - so that preferred English English spellings will be used by the spell-checker.

Perhaps, through long exposure to American English, 'meter' has also come to be used in Europe, but I believe the received wisdom lies somewhere between these propositions:
- only 'metre' is correct.
- 'metre' is standard English, but the American, 'meter' is also starting to be used.
- 'metre' is the preferred form; 'meter' is sometimes used.

I consider that 'meter' should trigger a spell-check error when the UK English dictionary is selected.

Correct intervention!

My mistake.
Both 'metre' and 'meter' are needed.

'Metre' = three feet three and three-eighths inches (give or take a furlong or two).
'Meter' = a grey box on a wall that hisses or hums, with a dial on the front.

English dictionary still needs fixing so that 'metre' doesn't trigger and error message.

Thank's for the hint! I've informed the developers.
