SoftMaker is betting that those customers who received a freebie today will willingly pay for an upgrade tomorrow … But one must remember that these new customers are the same ones that DID NOT want to pay for SoftMaker before, even after a 30-day trial. So to think that will suddenly sing to a different tune is another risky bet, I think!

Your point is well taken. I researched this a bit when we had a couple (I think 3 or 4) customers complaining that SoftMaker Office 2008 was free before Christmas when they had paid hard cash for it about a year earlier. The funny thing is that every single one of these found out about SoftMaker by starting with a free (Office 2006 Free Edition) or heavily discounted version. So, they were annoyed about a free Office 2008 offer when in fact they all had used the same mechanism as a stepstone into SoftMaker Office 2008...

I firmly believe that SoftMaker Office is the best and cheapest solution available out there, particularly for those of us who need both the Mobile and Windows versions.
Yes it is, but (at least outside the Mobile/Pocket PC world) a widely unknown one, too. When I told people about the Christmas promotion, the typical answer was: "Which office suite? Never heard about it."
Just like you, I gladly pay for upgrades, but I'm not annoyed about freebies because I want SoftMaker to survive and thrive for a long time coming. To do this, they have to extend their customer base and that means to get more publicity in the first place.
