I would like to use the "Numbering > Before" field and set up styles for figure captions and table captions; so, with "Figure " and "Table " before the autonumber. There seems to be a restriction on the number of characters I can use, which makes this impossible …

I would also like to be able to use a tab as the "Numbering > After", but can't work out how to do this.

Any workarounds?

#1: Before and after are restricted to 5 characters (in simple numbering) - that's why you have these problems. But you can use numbering styles. There are more characters available.

#2: This will work in Office 2012 for numbering styles.
