Hi there,
My computer is running a tradition chinese Vista windows OS. But when I open a simplified chinese doc, the characters can't be shown. How do I fix it?
Even the traditional chinese doc, it shows the "?" instead of characters... (wordpad works fine for the traditional chinese doc...)
Check the file name below. It can show the simplified chinese in the title.

Thanks a lot.

Hello,

is the text in your file really written in Times New Roman? It's probably a special chinese font. Is the font installed on your machine? You'll find the fonts in the control panel under "Fonts".

Hi sven,

I don't know very much how the fonts work. I suppose the application got me the right font when I open the doc.
Here is another example. The same file open by TextMaker and WordPad.

The file open with wordpad

The same file open with textmaker. I have changed the fonts from Times New Roman to Traditional Chinese, but not working.

I think I need to set something in the textmaker right?

Thanks.

Please find the file attached. It is a text file of subtitle for a movie.

Thanks for your help 8)

The attached file had a srt extension, but upload is not allowed with that extension. So, I changed it to .doc

Thank you for the example file. I referred it to the developers and will inform you here as soon as I have more information.

Your file is a text file. You need to use text import with options. There you can use the Big5 filter to import the file with traditional Chinese correctly:

1. Open TextMaker first
2. Open the file with type "Text files with additional options" (File=>Open=>Files of type)
3. In the dialog, select "other"
4. In the dropdown, select "Big5"

There is no way to detect that a file is encoded in Big5 character set, therefore you need to tell the application.
