I'm posting this request here because there seems to be no forum for 'help' regarding office for linux 2008. (there is curiously for 2006) anyway does anyone know of a good proceedure for adding the infintype true type fonts et.al to the /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory (also type 1 and X11 directories in fonts) and have them usable with X11 applications including SoftMaker Office.

Is there another directory SoftMaker uses for its fonts?

There is a lot of conflicting information regarding this for different versions of Debian. Most of the stuff I've found so far is regarding the older XF86 config not xorg the more up to date Debian.

Does Debian require a font's server to be installed for X to use these fonts?

Didn't know exactly if the water cooler was the right forum, but I'll start here.

I don't know all the places X11 looks for fonts, but SoftMaker Office tries these places, too.

In addition, SoftMaker Office looks in the fonts/ folder below where it is installed, and in the extra font paths you have added in Tools/Options.

So, as long as you want the fonts only in SoftMaker Office, you have plenty of choice. If they should be available across X11, then you need to figure out the standard folders, too.

I found a solution:

Since I'm the super-user on this machine, I ran an X session as root. Using the command 'su' it looks like: 'username' # startx. After that you won't get any annoying permission warnings..

Without out going into required packages, if you have the following directory:

/usr/share/fonts with three subdirectories: X11, truetype, type1

Open the truetype directory and you will see other sub-directories. In my system I have 'ttf-bitstream-vera' 'ttf-dejavu' 'ttf-sil-gentium' 'ttf-summersby' your sub-directories may be other true type fonts, like the ms true type fonts available.

I added to this list another sub-directory 'ttf-infinitype' and opened this directory on a two panel file viewer called "FileRunner" my favorite file manager.

In an Xterm I mounted the infinitype CD. In my version of Debian it's done like this: #mount /media/cdrom0

Now I can use the other panel in FileRunner to view the contents of the CD. After that I can select the fonts I want from the handbook list, and copy them into the 'ttf-infinitype' directory I made.

After all you want or need is copied into this directory, Debian does the rest for you. X applications will now list an awful lot of fonts. You might need to run '#dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config' to improve appearances.

I don't know if this will be helpful to other Linux users or even Debian users. I'm running about 40% experimental and 60% Unstable on my Debian Distro.
