Online/Offline Office
Online? Offline? Do I need a server to use Office anywhere? Or
even access to the Internet?
No, you can use Office anywhere any way you like. It's all your choice:
There are four ways to work with SoftMaker Office anywhere:
1. |
As a conventional office suite |
You can use SoftMaker Office anywhere "the conventional way":
You launch it just like any other conventional office suite, write
letters, manage your appointments and contacts, compose e-mails, etc.
Even features like the Document Management System are available,
letting you search through all of your documents within seconds. |
2. |
As a conventional office suite, using an additional mobile device |
If you own a mobile computer (e.g. a notebook computer or a Pocket
PC), you can use SoftMaker Office anywhere on both your PC and
your mobile device. Office anywhere will automatically synchronize
your documents, appointments, etc. with the other computer whenever
needed. Therefore, you have full access to all of your data on both
devices at any time. |
3. |
As a client/server version, using a server in a local network |
To use Office anywhere this way, an Office Server has
to be set up by simply installing the server version of the software.
All documents, appointments, contacts, etc. users enter will be
stored in one place on this server. There, each user has his
own private folder but still can share data with other
users, if desired.
Users can operate SoftMaker Office anywhere as follows:
They install a full version of SoftMaker Office on their machine. |
Alternative #1: They run the included "thin client"
software, which works just like the full version, but offloads most
of its processing to the server. |
Alternative #2: They simply use their web browser to work with
Office anywhere, which will not make a noticeable difference, except
the fact that the software is running inside the web browser.
That way, Office anywhere can be used on virtually any kind of computer
running any kind of operating system as long as it
comes with a web browser. |
4. |
As a client/server version, using a server connected to the Internet |
This variant is equivalent to the one mentioned above except
for the fact, that the server is also accessible from the Internet.
This enables users to access their data from any computer anywhere
in the world.
If no Internet connection is available at a certain time, the user
can switch to Offline Mode and continue working offline. As
soon as he reconnects to the Internet, all changes made to documents,
appointments, etc. will automatically be synchronized with the
documents on the server.
Of course, all data exchanged between the user's computer and the
server is transmitted securely, thereby keeping your data
confidential. Additionally, all files on the server are encrypted
in order to make unauthorized access impossible. |
Advantages of the client/server version
The client/server version of Office anywhere has some serious
benefits especially when it is used on your company's Intranet:
Users won't have to install a whole office suite to work with
Office anywhere. They just start a small client program from the
server, or even use SoftMaker Office through their web browser. |
Users won't have to take care of installing the latest software revisions,
since this is done centrally in one place (the server) by the administrator. |
Users save all of their documents on the server, which
guarantees that no files can get "lost" somewhere in
the depths of the user's own computer, where nobody will ever find
them again.
Additionally, the admin can easily make backups, check for viruses,
etc. |
Since all of a user's data and settings is stored on the server, he
can switch to another computer at any time and continue his
work right where he stopped. |
SoftMaker Office lets you choose the operating system you prefer.
You can use it on Windows machines, Linux machines, Pocket PCs
and any computer equipped with a web browser. |
Users can go "offline" any time they want. All their
data will be synchronized between their computer and the
server. The user can then disconnect from the server and work
offline. As soon as he logs in again, documents, e-mail messages,
etc. that were changed offline will be synchronized automatically. |
Support made easy: Since all of the users' data is stored on
the server, support teams will find it much easier to help
inexperienced users. Of course, maintaining program and user data is
easier as well. |
